Crested Butte Nordic is a nonprofit organization that grooms 55 km of winter trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, rents ski and snowshoe equipment, delivers nordic ski programs for youth and adults, and hosts events, including The Alley Loop Nordic Marathon and the Grand Traverse Ski, Run, & Mountain Bike. Nordic Center Staff

  • Position: Nordic Center Operations Specialist
    Reports To: Operations Manager / Nordic Center Manager
    Salary: $23/hour, non-exempt
    Hours of Work: 30-35 hours/week, weekend and holiday work required

    • 10-15 hours from January 15-February 5 & April 1-11; 30-35 hours/week February 5-March 31

    Job Description: The Nordic Center Operations Specialist is responsible for daily operations required for the Nordic Center and surrounding areas to run smoothly, which includes maintaining vehicles, snow removal, trail markings & signage, Magic Meadows Yurt upkeep, and indoor center needs. This position also will support front desk, events, and yurt events (Yurt Dinners, Yurt Bistro, Trivia Night) as needed. The primary responsibilities of Nordic Center staff, above all other tasks, are providing exemplary customer service to internal and external customers and providing flexible support throughout daily operations.

    Key Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Ensure CBN vehicles are clean, filled with gas, and any issues addressed that may come up with the support of the Operations Manager

    • Vehicle scheduling in collaboration with the Programs Manager

    • Move CBN vehicles as needed for snow removal in variable winter road conditions

    • Support Operations Manager with ensuring wood shed is stocked, and yurt wood supply is refilled

    • Facilitate port-a-potty exchange via snowmobile in collaboration with Operations Manager as needed throughout the season

    • Snow blow the parking spaces as needed throughout the shift, ensuring snowblower is well maintained and filled with gas

    • Ensure walkways, stairways, and paths around the Nordic Center and Outpost are shoveled and clear of ice

    • Drive snowmobile, trailer, tracked vehicle, and typical vehicles carrying supplies and staff on varying terrain and snowy conditions

    • Trail maintenance to include refreshing dog bag stations, signage, trash removal, and supporting bridge installation and removal

    • Sharpen rental ice skates throughout the season in collaboration with Service team

    • Ensure Nordic Center restrooms are clean and stocked with supplies

    • Ensure upstairs of Nordic Center is clean and stocked with supplies

    • Support seasonal events as needed, such as set up, tear down, or day-of assistance

    • Support with rentals and merchandise sales as needed in Nordic Center

    • Support with Yurt Dinners, Yurt Trivia and/or Bistro as needed

    • Communicate needs and feedback with other team members in a timely and constructive manner

    • Complete pre-and ongoing training as required

    • Uphold CBN policies and procedures in a remote, backcountry setting

    • Model and provide exemplary customer service

    Preferred Skills/Prerequisites:

    • 1-2 years experience driving snowmobile with trailer and vehicles on winter roads

    • Clean driving record

    • Ability to learn and receive feedback

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

    • Ability to lift up to 50 LBS, ambulate in tight spaces and carry loads up and down stairs

CB Nordic Team Coaching Staff

  • Position: Crested Butte Junior Nordic Team Coach
    Reports To:
    Youth Program Coordinator
    Compensation:
    $50/session base rate
    Hours of Work:
    Minimum of 2 sessions/week and up to 6 sessions a week at approximately 2.5 hours/session 

    Job Description:  We are hiring Youth Team Coaches for all ages, including K - 1st Grade, 2nd - 3rd Grade, 4th - 5th Grade, 6th - 8th Grade, Backcountry, Biathlon, and PreK - 3rd Grade Nordic Ski 4 PE. New coaches must commit to two or more sessions per week, working up to six sessions per week with a combination of groups. Coach time commitment is approximately 2.5 hours/session. Kindergarten through 3rd Grade sessions are January 6th - March 28th. 4th Grade - 8th Grade sessions are December 2nd - March 28th. Coaches should plan on attending pre-season training sessions in November and December.

    Key Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Coach youth sessions according to topics outlined in the group syllabus

    • Create a safe and positive environment for athletes and other coaches

    • Set measurable and attainable goals with athletes

    • Build relationships with athletes

    • Ensure athletes’ basic needs are met: safe, warm, dry

    • Be a superior role model for athletes

    • Use effective communication based on athlete’s age/developmental level

    • Have situational awareness to keep yourself and your group safe

    • Be on time for practices and coach meetings

    • Provide feedback to the Youth Programs Coordinator regarding lessons, your group’s progress throughout the season, and behavior or other challenges

    • Follow CBNT Policies and Procedures and the Coaches Manual

    • Report any incidents or accidents to the Youth Programs Coordinator

    • Promote racing opportunities to athletes and parents for youth after-school races, community series races, the Alley Loop, and other events

    • Occasionally ski with older/younger groups to develop team camaraderie and inclusion

    • Provide parents with tips to support their athletes

    • Share photos/videos with parents, Youth Program Coordinator, or marketing personnel

    • Attend pre-season coach trainings

    • Substitute for other coaches as needed

    Preferred Skills/Prerequisites:

    • 1st Aid and CPR

    • SAFESPORT Training will be required upon hire
